About Toto

Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio players working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group's name was derived from the Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore all styles of music.

The third album by Toto, Turn Back, was not a success in 1981. However they made amends with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two songs that were hits, including the title song and Roseanna. The album and their tour made them a household brand around the world.

After a brief break, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is different from the ballads that were featured on previous albums, and features some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.

When they record the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and is financially in trouble. They decide to change their name and make a new album using an entirely new producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.

In 1999, the band release Mindfields and begins an extensive tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and goes on to record their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa during the recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and to-Topia.Com keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

Toto is an American rock band that had their greatest success during the eighties. The band was created by experienced session musicians and has sold more than 40 million albums around the world.

The first album of the totos was the self-titled Toto album, which came out in 1978. The album was a huge hit and helped propel the band to international fame. Since then, the band has released 14 albums that have all been a hit.

In 1984, Toto wrote their first and, to this day only, movie score for the film Dune. It was a huge undertaking that required the entire group to be involved. The album that came out, Kingdom of Desire, was another successful record. After a world tour, drummer Bobby Kimball left the band and was replaced by drummer Fergie Frederiksen of Le Roux. The band continued to push forward with their fifth album, Isolation. The album included a number songs, including "Stranger in Town".

After Isolation Toto was released, the band went on a break. This gave each member of the group the chance to explore their own solo projects. In 1996, the band reformed to tour and record an album. It was the first time in more than a decade that all the original band members were on stage.

The following year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time that the original Toto members Toto were on stage together. The band broke up following this. Toto reunited for a benefit concert in 2010 to raise money for the ALS Foundation. This was the first time all of the original Toto members had been performing together for over 31 years. The original group was joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.

The album was a return to form for the group and the tour supported it with sold-out shows in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gathered momentum after the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
